Concerning the identification of a case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)  in  the  state  of  Mato  Grosso,  Brazil,  the  Brazilian  Beef  Exporters’ Association  (ABIEC)  wishes  to make  it clear  that  it is following  closely, and entirely  trusts,  the  process  being  conducted  by  the  Ministry  of  Agriculture, Livestock  and  Food  Supply  (MAPA)  through  its  National  Program   for  the Prevention and Surveillance of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (Portuguese acronym: PNEEB), the results of which show that it is an atypical occurrence  of the disease in an older animal that was presented for slaughter at approximately
17 years of age.
ABIEC also affirms that the case poses no risk to the human or animal food chain, as the official note published by MAPA itself makes clear.
ABIEC reaffirms its trust in Brazil’s sanitary controls, and the identification of the case proves the safety and efficiency of MAPA’s systems.
The official communiqué from MAPA follows below:
Occurrence of an atypical case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy  in the state of Mato Grosso
The Secretariat of Animal and Plant Health of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) wishes to confirm the occurrence of an atypical case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy  (BSE) in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The disease occurs spontaneously and sporadically, and is not linked to the ingestion of contaminated feed.

The animal was a 17-year-old cow slaughtered to produce beef. The specific risk material for BSE was entirely removed from the animal during emergency slaughter and incinerated at the slaughterhouse itself. Other products from the carcass were identified, located, and preventively seized, and no product entered the human or ruminant food chain. There
is thus no risk to the population at large;

lt must be stressed that MAPA and the Mato Grosso Animal Health Authority (INDEA/MT) immediately commenced investigations in the field, and blocked the farm of origin. AIl sanitary risk-mitigation actions were completed even before the final test result was published by a World Animal Health Organization (0/E) reference laboratory. After confirmation today, Friday May 31, Brazil officially notified the 0IE and importing countries in accordance with international rules.

According to OIE  standards, there will be no change to Brazil’s risk category for BSE: the country will continue to be at negligible risk, the best possible classification for BSE. In more than 20 years of surveillance for the disease, Brazil has recorded only three cases of atypical BSE, and no cases of classical BSE.
